Mathew Carter

Sudden the silence,
another song heard.

Mobile phone piercing shrill,
siren, distant, ululates.
a gleeful schadenfreude derision
through the concrete penetrates.

Cicada silent, now;
does he ponder louder calls?
Polyphonic serenades
hold genomic cries in thrall?

Does he wait, appreciate,
or is he gripped with fear?
Are these fellow choristers
or a tumult to his ear?

Cicada waits—
Other songs are heard.
