Fragmented Utterances was created by Val McClean.
Val is a Scottish artist currently undertaking a practice led MPhil/PhD at Edinburgh College of Art. She uses a variety of media in her works exploring the nature of meaning, identity and subjectivity.
Increasingly, my work is driven by a desire to explore the ways in which we strive to find, or impose, sense in our world. I look at ways of breaking down traditional ‘meaning structures’ as encoded in our experience of language and the visual. Specifically in Fragmented Utterances I use structured yet nonsensical 'utterances' to explore the relationship between form and content and the nature of the threshold that exists between sense and nonsense, sanity and insanity, order and chaos.
